Julien Edwards, Hit-Boy and DJ Casanova attend Casey Veggies’ 21st birthday at Greystone Manor on July 20, 2014 in West Hollywood, LA.
Hit-Boy and Big Hit Discuss their favorite artists from Aretha Franklin to Jay Z, Timbaland, the Neptunes, and more.
Originally reigning from Norfolk, Virginia, MC King – Kent M$ney has always been a force to be reckoned with; even since birth. “When I was born in Virginia somebody died on the bus. My mom was pregnant with me, and she went into labor..she was sitting behind the person that died.” Which I found to be quite an extraordinary introduction to the world since it is often said with every death, comes new life. Karma worked fast as hell!
Moving to Rialto, commonly referred to as ‘the toe’ at the age of 12, Kent grew up by Eisenhower on Lilac. With a bad temper and unwillingness to connect with others, his mom would send him home every summer and school break just so that he could stay connected with his family and have a sense of social connection. Kent was always inclined to music. Virginia being an influential musical city, birthing geniuses such as Teddy Riley, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Pharell, The Clipse, and the list goes on. Moving to California gave him a new type of musical wave. Being exposed to Snoop, Dr. Dre, Dj Quick , and Sugar free-just to name a few, Kent got the best of both worlds, which he describes as that ‘balance’. However, not everything was picture perfect in the young Mc’s life.
From toting product in his bag as a kid, to facing 36 years in prison at the age of 15 – I won’t even disrespect his journey by calling him a success story. It is truly an inspiring one filled with tragedy, hope, and brining your dreams into fruition. Everything from his past, whether bad or good, helped to shape this living legend.
With a past like Kent’s you would expect it to harden the heart of any young angry African American male, but this diamond in the rough was a little different.”…people telling me all these stories about how if you got a felony or something, you can’t get no job. You can’t do this, you can’t do that. But here I was doing music, going to school, I was hooping at Mount Sac just to hoop, and niggas from Florida State was like if you wanna come hoop here we got this lil scholarship. And I was like hellll naaaaa cause ion even wanna come here nigga, like every single day….” Being paroled for three years and told there’s no life after felonies – Kent created one!
From his first project entitled ‘Becoming’ to his sophomore project ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ you hear stories of a young SOULja who had to go through a couple of wars to find his purpose. And it’s not only lyrics and hip hop for Mr.M$ney . He aspires to leave a space for kids to come and get help with education, survivor skills, counseling, and ultimately a safe haven for our youth and provide doors that weren’t open for himself. Kent M$ney is affiliated with Hit Boy’s HS87 crew, and is working on his new project ‘Crowned’ with no set release quite yet but aiming towards September. You can tune in to his first single off of ‘Crowned’ entitled ‘Home Alone‘ sampling the home alone theme song from the movie; produced by Haze Banga featuring his HS87 posse.
